Dental crowns and bridges

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth to protect it and restore its shape. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap.

Crowns and bridges are the specialty of a prosthodontist. Dr. Rima checks the fit, colour and bite of each one.

Explained after your check-up

You may need a crown or bridge if

  • A tooth is cracked, broken or heavily filled
  • A back tooth has had a root canal
  • A tooth is badly worn or discoloured
  • You have a gap from a missing tooth
  • An old crown or bridge is loose, broken or looks dark at the gum

How a crown or bridge is made

  1. 1

    Examination

The tooth is checked, with an X-ray if needed, and any decay is treated.

  2. 2

    Preparing the tooth

Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped so the crown can fit over it.

  3. 3

    Impression or scan

An accurate copy of your teeth is taken and the shade is matched.

  4. 4

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made.

  5. 5

    Fitting

The final crown or bridge is checked for fit, colour and bite, then cemented in place.

Crown materials

Dr. Rima recommends a material based on where the tooth is and how much force it takes.

  • Zirconia

Strong and tooth-coloured. Often used for back teeth.

  • All-ceramic

Very natural-looking. Often used for front teeth.

  • Metal-ceramic

A metal base covered with porcelain.

Questions

Crowns & Bridges: common questions

Ask your own question
How long does a dental crown last?

With good care, crowns can last many years. How long depends on the material, your bite and how well you look after your teeth and gums.

Crown or implant: which is better for a missing tooth?

A crown covers an existing tooth. For a missing tooth, the choices are an implant or a bridge. Dr. Rima explains the pros and cons of each for your gap.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed while it is prepared. It may feel slightly sensitive for a few days after the crown is fitted.

How many visits does a crown need?

Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and one to fit the final crown. Some cases need more.
